The songbirds are back. Winter’s quietude has given way to the chorus-filled air of spring.
It took me a while to notice.
On my morning walk with Izzy today, I was head down, lost in thought, oblivious to my surroundings. Suddenly, Izzy, my wonder dog, stopped and refused to budge, jolting me from my mental chatter. I looked up to see her standing there, simply absorbing the moment.
That’s when I finally heard it—the lively chirp and chatter of birds filling the air, bringing color to a previously black-and-white world.
It’s easy to overlook subtle changes when we’re consumed by our inner dialogue. And isn’t this exactly what happens in business?
We become so entrenched in daily tasks, the endless minutiae, that we fail to notice larger shifts and critical changes: we miss the “songbirds” within our organizations.
Who are these “songbirds”?
They’re our team members—the dedicated individuals who consistently show up, roll up their sleeves, and make things happen. They’re the heartbeat of our organizations, the essential force driving progress. Yet, too often, we overlook their significance, treating them as mere background noise.
Here’s how to change that:
Attentive Observation
Consciously step back to genuinely see and understand your team’s contributions. Recognize and value the efforts of these organizational “songbirds” amidst daily distractions.
Empowerment Through Recognition
Shift your focus from control to empowerment. Use recognition intentionally to foster autonomy, growth, and motivation among your team, helping them realize their importance.
Culture of Appreciation
Integrate appreciation into your organization’s daily routines. Create an environment where everyone consistently feels acknowledged, respected, and valued.
Don’t get lost in your mental maze, fixated on your endless to-do lists. Instead, take a cue from Izzy: remember there’s an entire world beyond your immediate thoughts.
Avoid being trapped by routine, forgetting to appreciate the “songbirds” whose contributions ensure the ecosystem—your organization—flourishes.
Imagine if Izzy led your next team meeting: “Before we dive into quarterly numbers, let’s pause to celebrate Susan’s exceptional spreadsheet work. Bob, your presentation was a masterpiece!”
Perhaps then we’d recognize that genuine business harmony, just like in nature, comes from appreciating the melodies that truly matter.
