What’s your style – we all have our own distinct rhythm as we move through the world, a particular way we connect, communicate, and step into leadership. It’s that unique fingerprint that makes you, well, you. You’ve got your own flavor, your own style.
Now, some of that comes straight from the factory – how our brains are wired.
But then we add our own layers, the patterns we’ve picked up along the journey.
Maybe you became the go-to person, the responsible one (especially the first-born among you).
Or perhaps you’re a rebel who leaned into being the one who challenges the status quo (you middle children know who you are).
These patterns that we formed early on are both our rocket fuel and the anchor holding us back.
My own style is ‘text book’. As the baby of the family, the rules never really applied to me. I was given a heck of a lot of freedom. And, when trouble loomed, I learned how to charm my way out.
Decades later, I’m simply awesome at facilitating through conflict with my clients. The danger zone I have to navigate through is a tendency to crash into sensitive areas when it’s not helpful.
And, the willingness to color outside the lines that I developed as the youngest in my family became a fierce independent streak.
This is not a quality that’s necessarily welcomed as a bank executive (where I spent nearly 10 years) but serves me well as an entrepreneur (and adventurer).
And, as a coach, I easily say what needs to be said (the cold, hard truth) without alienating the team I’m working with. I naturally inspire them toward a deeper level of connectivity, even in the face of conflict.
My style is my superpower…and it’s kryptonite, all in one. Yours is too.
So, what is your style? Are you the one who drives results, but sometimes leaves a bit of dust in your wake? Or are you the ultimate connector, the one who builds bridges but avoids those tough, crucial conversations?

Your natural style is powerful, but it’s also the ceiling on your growth and your impact.
Want to achieve more, experience greater fulfillment, build stronger teams, and lead with even more impact?
Your inherent style is your starting point, your foundation. The power comes from having awareness of your style and then intentionally flexing it to meet the moment and the people you’re leading so you can get the result you want.
Stepping out of our engrained style, that’s where true leadership – and true impact – happens.
PS-I’d love to hear how your birth order impacts your style: how you show up. Please do share, we’d all love to hear. Thanks.
